The Minimalist Kitchen Setup for Eighty Square Feet

You do not need a tiled backsplash or a three-burner stove to eat well on the road. This is our minimalist setup for cooking three meals a day.

RIG SETUP

Social media is full of van conversions featuring marble-patterned countertops and complex propane ovens that belong in a suburban apartment. When we built this rig, we chose a different path by limiting our kitchen to a single butane burner and a ten-inch cast iron skillet.

The Utility of Cast Iron

A seasoned cast iron skillet is the only pan we carry because it transitions seamlessly from our indoor burner to an open campfire. It holds heat beautifully in cold weather, requires minimal water to clean, and only gets better with every road-trip meal. We wipe it clean with a bit of coarse salt and a dry rag, saving our precious fresh water supply for drinking.

One Burner One Pot

Cooking with a single burner forces you to simplify your menu down to hearty, one-pot dishes like stews, scrambles, and rice bowls. We do not miss the complexity of multi-course meals because the simplicity of cleanup means more time spent outside before the sun goes down. A minimalist kitchen is not a sacrifice; it is a deliberate choice to trade convenience for freedom.
